How to export your Apple Health data

Apple Health can export everything it has recorded — steps, heart rate, sleep, workouts, body metrics — as an XML archive from your iPhone. Baseline reads Apple Health rowing workouts today, and uses the latest body-mass reading to refresh your profile weight.

Can you export this data?

Yes. Apple Health includes a built-in export that produces a ZIP containing an export.xml file, plus workout-route files where relevant.

Step-by-step

  1. 1On your iPhone, open the Health app.
  2. 2Tap your profile picture or initials in the top-right corner.
  3. 3Scroll down and tap Export All Health Data.
  4. 4Wait for the export to prepare — this can take several minutes for long-standing accounts.
  5. 5When it's ready, share the exported ZIP to somewhere you can retrieve it from a computer (iCloud Drive, Files, email to yourself).

What’s in the file

The export is a ZIP with two XML files: export.xml (all your records) and export_cda.xml (a clinical-document version). Workout route files are also included for workouts that recorded GPS.

What Baseline does with it

Baseline extracts rowing workouts from the export (`HKWorkoutActivityTypeRowing`), and updates your profile weight from the latest body-mass reading. Because export.xml can be very large, Baseline streams the file rather than loading it all into memory. Non-rowing workouts and non-body-mass records are ignored for now.

Common issues

  • The export can be big — several hundred megabytes on a long-standing account. Give the phone time to prepare it.
  • Some third-party apps write data to Apple Health in idiosyncratic ways; Baseline flags fields it doesn't recognise rather than silently including them.
  • Apple Health data isn't a substitute for HR data recorded during a specific workout — for a rowing session, the Concept2 or Garmin file is still the better source.

Privacy note

Apple Health data is sensitive. Your export.xml is parsed in your browser and discarded when the tab closes. Only the derived summary — rowing workouts and your latest body-mass reading — is ever sent to Baseline's servers, and only if you sign in and choose to save. The raw XML never leaves your browser.

Frequently asked

Do I need an iPhone to use Baseline?
No. Apple Health is one of many sources. You can use Baseline with just Concept2 and Garmin files — you don't need an iPhone at all.
What does Baseline actually read from the export?
Rowing workouts (start, end, duration, distance, energy burned, source app) plus the single most recent body-mass reading. Everything else in export.xml — steps, HR, sleep, other workouts — is skipped for now.
Can I upload just the workouts, not everything?
You can upload the whole export.zip or a raw export.xml, and Baseline picks out only the parts it currently reads. There's no need to trim the file yourself.

Ready when your file is

Once you have your export, drop it into Baseline to see one joined-up view across rowing, endurance and body metrics.
